Stein Wins GSA's George P. Woollard Award

Above: Seth Stein on a recent EPS field trip to Yellowstone Park.

EPS is delighted to announce that Professor Seth Stein has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the George P. Woollard Award, one of the highest distinctions given by the Geological Society of America, for his contributions to the field of geophysics. Stein investigates plate boundary processes and deformation within the lithosphere by using a range of techniques, including space-based geodesy, seismology, and marine geophysics. In his thirty years at Northwestern, his work has provided key insights in a broad array of areas such as normal mode analysis, plate motion modeling, plate boundary deformation, deep earthquakes, postglacial rebound, the structure of the oceanic plate, and seismic hazards. Along the way, he has produced over 100 scholarly publications, ascended to the ranks of the world's most frequently cited scientific researchers, and co-authored the authoritative introductory textbook on seismological concepts and methods. Stein is widely recognized as one of the world's leading geophysicists and is well deserving of the Woollard Award. Congratulations to Professor Stein on this honor!
