Directions
Below you will find directions to
Locy Hall by either car, plane, or bus. A map of the
area immediately surrounding Locy Hall is at the bottom
of the page.
The Department of Geological Sciences resides in Locy
Hall, right on the shore of Lake Michigan on Northwestern
University's main campus in the Chicago suburb of Evanston,
the community immediately North of the city.
Locy Hall
If you are traveling by car
The most convenient approach is along Interstate 94
(known as the Kennedy and Edens expressways). Take Exit
37 (Dempster Avenue), and travel East to Sheridan Road
(one block before Dempster ends at Lake Michigan). Proceed
North on Sheridan until you reach Northwestern University,
where Sheridan Road will make a sharp turn to the left.
Bear right at this turn, pulling onto South Campus Drive.
The map below shows this turn clearly.
As you turn onto South Campus Drive,
park in the double-decker parking structure immediately
on the right. Locy Hall is directly across the street
from this garage. Again, see the map below for details.
Obtain a temporary parking permit in the Department
Office on the third floor.

If you are traveling by plane
It is preferable to use O'Hare International Airport,
which is approximately 25 km from Evanston, instead
of Midway Airport, which is more than 50 km to the South.
If you are flying into O'Hare International
Airport:
It is best to use a taxi from O'Hare to Evanston. You
have two options. Chicago cabs are right outside the
terminal, although some need directions:
Take the Kennedy Expressway to Harlem,
Harlem North to Golf, and Golf East all the way to Northwestern
campus.
Alternatively, you can call a local cab (1-888-CALL-303),
whose driver will know how to find Northwestern, and
will meet you outside the terminal. The fare (straight
meter for a Chicago cab, or flat rate for 303) should
be about $25.
If you are flying into Midway Airport:
Airline fares to Midway may occasionally be so low as
to make this relatively distant airport an attractive
alternative, but the taxi fare from the airport to Northwestern
may be in excess of $50, and traffic through downtown
Chicago on your way to Evanston may be extremely busy.
Directions from Midway Airport to
Evanston:
Go North on Cicero to I-55 (a couple
of miles), then North on I-55 (the Stevenson Expressway)
to I-90/94, then West on I-94 (the Dan Ryan Expressway,
which becomes the Kennedy Expressway and then the Edens
Expressway) to exit 37 (Dempster Avenue). See the car
directions above.
Using the "El" to get from Chicago airports
to Evanston:
Both Chicago airports are easily (and inexpensively)
reached by subway (the "El"), with stations
in the basement of the terminal at O'Hare and across
the parking lot at Midway.
El stations serving campus on the
Evanston line are "Davis" and "Foster."
Foster Street can be seen on the map below. From there
it is a three-block walk into campus.
From O'Hare to Evanston, the ride
involves going all the way into downtown and changing
lines, so your total time on the El will be about two
hours. The ride from Midway to Evanston, although a
more direct route, will also take more than an hour.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are traveling by bus
Greyhound Bus lines have a few schedules into the Skokie
Bus Terminal, which is only about 7 km from campus.
A cab ride from Skokie to Campus should not be more
than $10. There is also a spur of the subway (the "El")
running into the Skokie terminal known as the "Skokie
Swift," which through a connection at "Howard"
can get you to campus. However, the Skokie Swift does
not operate on weekends.

Map of Locy Hall
and Surrounding Area
Below is a map of the southern half of Northwestern's
Evanston campus. Locy Hall, the home of N.U.'s Department
of Geological Sciences, is number 29, marked in red.
If you are arriving by car, it is
best to park in the large parking deck directly east
of Locy Hall. It is marked on the map with a red dot.
Once parked, you must obtain a temporary parking permit
from the Department Office on the third floor of Locy
Hall.
