Each newly admitted graduate student is assigned as advisors one faculty member and the Graduate Advisor. The function of these advisors is to help the student choose the courses and research subjects leading to the M.S. or Ph.D. New students will be introduced to their advisor before registration. After the first quarter, the student should meet with the advisors at least once per quarter.

Students must choose courses to encompass a broad range of fields (such as tectonics, geochemistry, geophysics, sedimentary geology, and others) and they should consult the Graduate Advisor about achieving such breadth in their registration. The Graduate Advisor must approve and sign for course registrations each quarter. Student progress is reviewed by the departmental faculty at regular intervals.

If a student decides to change research specialization, he or she may change research advisors by submitting a written request to the graduate advisor; approval for such a change must also be obtained in writing.

Within the first quarter of the academic year, all first-year graduate students should familiarize themselves with the research interests of all of the departmental faculty. Students are encouraged to contact each faculty member about their research.
