1946 Aleutian Tsunami Survey

Marquesas 2000

Interview of witnesses of the 1946 tsunami in the village of Hokatu, Ua Huka (French Polynesia),
10 August 2000.

From left to right: Gerard Fryer (University of Hawaii); Anne-Marie Kehueitu, 59; her mother Anastasie Kehueitu, 79 [dean of the village]; Delphine Taiaapu (born after the tsunami; the present school teacher who organized the meeting); Marie Teikihuavanaka, 75; and Emile Okal.
Anne-Marie and her mother pointed our attention to the coral blocks deposited on the floor of the eastern valleys of the island, where their family used to harvest and dry copra at the time of the tsunami.
