The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to serve as Operational Director for our Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratory (NU-SIBL), who will maintain and operate the analytical facility and contribute substantially to graduate and undergraduate student training and instruction.
The laboratory is a shared facility that includes two Thermo Delta V+ isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS) with GC, gas bench, EA and TC-EA peripherals. Current analytes include compound-specific δ13C and δ2H of organic molecules, δ13C and δ18O of carbonates and DIC, bulk δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δ2H, and δ18O of soils, sediments, and organic materials. The laboratory is overseen by PIs Osburn, Axford, Sageman, Hurtgen, and Blair and is part of the Integrated Laboratories for Earth and Planetary Sciences.
Primary responsibilities include 1.) operation and maintenance of IRMS and peripheral instruments, 2.) training and oversight of students and post docs to prepare and analyze samples, 3.) teaching through development and instruction of applied laboratory courses, 4.) sample management, analysis, and invoicing in support of the recharge facility, 5.) data reduction and quality control, 6.) management of laboratory supplies and ordering, and 7.) enforcement of laboratory safety standards and protocols.
Additional opportunities may include collaboration with faculty on proposal development and research opportunities, methods development to expand analytical capabilities and efficiencies, and/or professional development in the form of short courses or conference attendance.
Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in a geoscience, environmental science, analytical chemistry, or related field, demonstrated one year minimum of hands-on experience with maintenance of IRMS instruments and some of the peripherals, strong oral and written communication skills, basic computer skills (Isodat, Excel, etc), the ability to troubleshoot complex instrumentation.
Preferred qualifications include 2+ years hands on experience with continuous flow instruments or compound-specific IRMS measurements, previous experience with lab management, recharge center operation, student training, and/or teaching.
Applications will be accepted electronically and must include a cover letter describing qualifications and previous research and teaching experience, contact information for three references, and a CV. Salary will be commensurate with experience level and agreed responsibility level upon hiring. Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and will be accepted until June 30, 2023.
