Archaeology Image: Port (Micronesia)

Sea Wall, Lelu islet, Kosrae Island, Federated States of Micronesia. This seawall, constructed circa 1250 A.D. of polygonal basalt columns, protected the harbor and canal entrances of the Kosrae royal city on the islet of Lelu. Subsequent silting and mangrove growth has allowed the port to be reclaimed by the tropical jungle as the shoreline has steadily receded.
